Sally Hartung Murphy

Illinois United States
(b. 1936 - d. 2013)

Sara (Sally) grew up in Portland, Oregon, where she received a bachelor's degree in Home Economics and a master's degree in Fabrics and Textiles with a minor in Art. Later she moved to Chicago, Illinois, and designed women's lingerie as an employee in the research and development department of a major retail store. She married Jerry (Gerald) Murphy of Chicago in 1962 and later they moved to Westchester, Illinois. Sally and Jerry have two children, Douglas and Kristen. (Her husband Jerry passed away several years ago.) Sally's children were her life. She took pride in who they were and all they achieved. As a young mother, Sally became associated with La Leche League. A few years after she became a La Leche League Leader, she was a staff member at the LLL International Office in Franklin Park, Illinois. She worked at planning many International Conferences and wore many hats at the office, including Executive Secretary, manager of several departments, and meeting planner in the Education Department.

Sally loved learning and immersed herself in new classes, workshops, and crafts. Her love of design inspired her to use mixed media in the creation of jewelry, acrylic artwork, and painted silk clothing. She was also a massage therapist, craniosacral therapist, acupressurist, and Reiki Master. Another passion was traveling to many places in the world, including trips to visit friends and family across the United States. In 2011, Sally was diagnosed with cancer and went through treatments. In 2012 she traveled with her brother and sister-in-law to several National Parks. In September 2012, the cancer recurred. In January 2013, Sally decided to move to Portland to be close to her family. Shortly thereafter, her health rapidly declined and she passed away on January 23, 2013. Sally is survived by her son and daughter and three grandchildren.
